Kia Sportage will receive a five-star Euro NCAP security rating

• Sportage and Tonale receive five stars.
• The BMW i4 will receive four stars due to a lack of accident prevention technology.
• Euro NCAP tests are now more durable than ever.

Euro NCAP awarded the Kia Sportage a five-star safety rating. This is part of the most current series of security tests, which also saw full marks for the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the fully-electric Cupra Born, and the brand new Mercedes T-Class van-based MPV.

Last year, the Hyundai Tucson – with which the Kia Sportage shares many components – also received the prestigious Euro NCAP certification. To get such a grade, a new automobile must exhibit “outstanding performance in crash safety and [come] well-equipped with comprehensive and powerful crash avoidance expertise.”

The newly revealed Alfa Romeo Tonale was criticized by Euro NCAP for lacking center airbags; however, the Italian SUV received high marks due to its superior Driver Consideration alert system and strong performance in the car-to-car and weak street person crash tests.

In addition to the aforementioned models, there were a few additional cars on test; Toyota’s newest city automobile/pseudo-SUV, the Aygo X, received four stars. According to Euro NCAP, this model lacks a number of the top security programs, preventing it from receiving the highest overall grade.

Finally, and maybe to the surprise of many, the BMW i4 was only able to acquire a four-star security rating from the neutral European body. Despite being a new model, the i4 employs security algorithms designed for the 2019 BMW 3 Series, which means it lacks some of the most recent collision avoidance technology.

This is a perfect example of how demanding Euro NCAP examinations have become in recent decades. The Renault ZOE electrical city automobile was recently given a zero-star rating due to the lack of head airbags, and the Dacia Jogger might only receive one star due to its very limited choice of security options. In fact, many cars appear to have scored higher in previous years.
